I had a blissful time today in the surreal location known as “rural Kansas” where the coronavirus doesn’t exist and you can’t socially distance because there are no people anyway.
The real world sucks.

Missing a certain je ne sais quoi on the “corners” front though, no?

Some of the back roads have tight enough sections of grid layout to make some fun turns. Usually closer to major highways or towns which will throw off the normal 1 mile grid. Also I think I’ve seen more curves in rural roads than our city roads.

Road signs like that (but perhaps a better example would be those “rough pavement” signs) always make me think about how they had to send a crew out to install them. Obviously it’s by far the cheaper option, but it still pains me to think that they spent time & money on a permanently-installed non-solution. It sends “we know there’s a problem here and we’re not doing anything about it” vibes.

Ugh... Kansas. My Brother in law lives out there, I’ve been twice, and if I never go back I’d be okay with it.

I’ve never been out west, but the very idea of no hills, no frills, and corners seems strange. Where I live, even the planned grids aren’t straight though they certainly seemed to try. Must make for some good cruising though.

On the other hand, the fact that these roads were installed and maintained at all by any sort of government entity was pretty surprising. They could have easily said sorry, you want to drive between your fields? That’s your problem.
(I wonder how much maintenance is done by the handful of folks who live on them though)

It’s not an exciting place but it was a good place to forget about life for a day.

That is true. Or forever. My BIL was stationed out there in the Army for a while, met his wife, got transferred to DC (where the rest of our families live). He was stationed here for 2 years, decided he hated the big city (even though we’re all from here) , and they moved back to Kansas and have been there ever since.
And to be fair I did have a little bit of fun , the second time I was out there - we went to his wife’s family’s ranch and did redneck stuff. We shot guns, tore around in 4x4s, chased cows, and drank beers. It was fun and I keep saying that’s my ideal life, but I think I’d get bored after about 4 or 5 days.

Yeah and I have to admit there’s a difference between super-rural roads like that and the more commonly traveled “ collector roads” that I see those “rough pavement” signs on. It’s just that I get a similar feeling from both signs, as if the spending towards thos e signs is emblematic of a larger funding/management issue that keeps them from giving those roads more attention.

I want one of those signs as a sticker and then print off a whole ream of them and place on every vehicle with tires that look like this:

The excitement comes from un con trolled intersections with no indicated right of way.

And the locals who take their half out of the middle, I expect.
